Brief Overview of the PGL Copenhagen 2024 Opening Stage
The matches of the Opening Stage of the PGL Copenhagen 2024 tournament took place over the past 4 days. From the very first match, this Opening Stage started breaking people’s pick’ems right away. For most fans, the teams they picked to be eliminated with a 0-3 record were Brazil’s paiN Gaming and Legacy, but paiN Gaming defeated Apeks, and Legacy took down FURIA.
As for our country’s team, The MongolZ, they faced Turkey’s Eternal Fire. There were high expectations that they might win, but they lost. They played on the Nuke map, and starting on the T side definitely had an impact. They switched sides at a 3-9 score and eventually lost the match 6-13, dropping into the 0-1 bracket.
In the second round, The MongolZ faced the local team ECSTATIC and once again played on the Nuke map, but still lost, falling to 0-2. Meanwhile, the second team representing the Asia region, Lynn Vision, went up against Brazil’s FURIA and pulled off a major upset by winning 13-9. A lot of people had also picked Lynn Vision as their 0-3 team in their pick’ems.
In the second day of the tournament, The MongolZ team played their third match, which was an elimination match, against Russia’s AMKAL team. They won on Nuke, lost on Mirage, and won on Inferno, taking the series with a 2:1 score and continuing in the tournament.
With 1 win and 2 losses, The MongolZ team faced Asia’s regular competitor Lynn Vision in the fourth round of the tournament, which turned out to be an easy matchup for them. The MongolZ defeated their opponent 2-0 by winning on the Ancient and Anubis maps.
After starting the tournament with 2 straight losses on the first day, The MongolZ team won in rounds 3 and 4, bringing their record to 2-2, and were set to play a decisive match against Brazil’s Legacy team. The winner of this match would continue in the tournament, while the losing team would be eliminated.
Facing a Brazilian team was, in a way, also favorable for The MongolZ, as they have consistently won against Brazilian teams in the past and have even earned the nickname “Brazilian Slayers.” Because of this, they played with a psychological advantage and won the match with a 2-0 score, advancing to the next stage.
Thus, the Opening Stage matches came to an end, and although The MongolZ team started with a 0-2 record, they turned it around to 3-2, making a reverse sweep and advancing to the Elimination Stage. By doing so, they secured a spot for 3 teams from the Asia region to participate in the next major, the Shanghai Major.
