Summary of the PGL Copenhagen 2024 Elimination Stage

First day – 1st and 2nd periods

On the first day of the tournament, the MongolZ faced off against NaVi on the Mirage map. Up until the 19th round of the game, both teams looked fairly evenly matched at 9-9, until Navi toppled MongolZ’s defence and they lost the round. In the end, they lost the game 10-13.

In the 1st period, Eternal Fire toppled Vitality, Heroic smashed FaZe, and Imperial defeated VirtusPro. This meant that in round 2, our MongolZ boys were matched up to play Vitality. They clashed on the Nuke map and were leading 7-5 in the first half. However, they lost their lead after changing ends and were bested in the pistol round.

As a result, MongoLz lost two games on the first day, leaving them with 0-2 on the boards, and played a qualification match the next day.

2nd day – round 3

In the Elimination round, MongolZ came up against Brazil’s paiN Gaming, winning the first map, Mirage, but losing on the second map, Nuke. The decisive 3rd match was played on Inferno and was an evenly matched affair. Three rounds of overtime were played, but in the end, it was the home team that took the day.

So, MongolZ finished the tournament with 3 defeats in the qualification stage. However, they did make it into the top 16 teams, adding more Asian representation, which is quite an achievement. Brazil’s FURIA also finished with 0-3 on the stat sheets.

Spirit and MOUZ on the other hand both finished the tournament 3-0. Eternal Fire vs FaZe turned out to be an unpredictable affair, ending with the scores tied at 1-1. Eternal Fire’s 13-1 victory on Overpass map clearly showed everyone how well they had prepared.

Final days of Elimination

The final two days brought us the final – and epic showdown between the two highest-rated teams: G2 vs. Virtus Pro. Virtus Pro were in the lead in overtime on the first map, Overpass; however, the second map Inferno was tensely fought.

In Inferno, when the two teams were drawn at 11-11, an unfortunate incident occurred when Virtus Pro in a vital moment – Jame’s computer crashed as they were defending the bomb site. After almost winning round 2, they lost the match and went on to lose on Anubis in Game 3 to bring their tournament to an end.

So, Virtus Pro were the only team of these 8 to qualify for the Elimination stage, while the other 7 teams made it through the Play-Offs, and Eternal Fire made it all the way from the Opening Stage to the final.

Another interesting thing about this Major is that 7 out of the 8 teams that qualified for the finals are in the HLTV rankings top 10. So, we can expect that the finals are going to be very exciting indeed. The finals will run from March 28.
