When will de_Cache arrive in CS2?
Many players are wondering when “Cache”, a hugely popular map from CS:GO, will make its return in CS2. Let’s look into this question and see what we can find out. First of all, let’s take a closer look at the Cache map.Development of Cache
Originally created by Salvatore “Volcano” Garozzo on May 16, 2011, Cache was built for CS:Source, and shortly after the release of CS:GO, it was ported to CS:GO on December 1, 2012. This map is based on Chernobyl, Ukraine, and is an atmospheric map depicting rusty factory buildings that are long out of use.
Shawn “FMPONE” Snelling, who was the creator of the CS_Museum map at the time, made adjustments to the map and incorporated Cache into the game with Operation Bravo, released in September 2013.
Since then, the map earned countless fans, and made a reappearance in Operation Phoenix. With the subsequent release of Operation Breakout, he announced that the map would become one of the game’s official maps.
Cache, which has long been a fan favorite, was temporarily removed from the game in March 2019 and replaced by Vertigo. Soon though, a revamped Cache made its grand return in August 2019.
However, some things, such as the overbearing green color, were unpopular and the map did not make it into Active Duty in 2023, and with the release of CS2, players were no longer able to use it.
So when will it come back?
First and foremost, people want Cache to return so that they can play competitively with each other; it doesn’t get into the Active Duty map pool. As mentioned earlier, Valve itself developed the rest of the maps, but it is up to FMPONE to decide when Cache will be available.
As for FMPONE, with the release of CS2, he stated that the Source 2 map editing tools were fantastic and greatly increased his productivity. He decided to rebuild his previously developed Santorini map using these tools.
Not long ago, in November last year, he released Santorini under the name “THERA”, which means that players can download and play the map on community servers. As for THERA, Santorini’s bomb site A was left untouched, while the bulk of the area and bomb site B were completely rebuilt.
Recently, streamer fl0m discussed FMPone on his stream, claiming that he has now finished his THERA map, and is moving on to his Cache map. However this time, he wants to design and develop the Cache map completely from scratch, and is looking into making some updates to certain parts.
No exact time frame has been given, but it is important to know that the Cache map is in development and that it is only a matter of time before it gets added to the game. There’s no definite timeline, but it looks like we could see Cache in the game next fall.
